What should I do with those employment agencies? I am looking for a job and considering to try those employment agencies (kelly services, pro resources,manpower...etc). What do I need to bring with me when I go there? Do I need to call them up first or just walk in? I have M.S. degree and looking for something more than entry level.
What are the best employment search engines to use? I am in the Boston area. I am registered with Accountemps, Kelly Services, Ajilon Finance, Randstad, and other employment agencies. I have exhausted their databases and now I need some new job leads. Can you all suggest any other ones to try?
kelly services question? so i've been doing a temp factory job through kelly services since i moved here until i was able to land a full-time substantial job. I did get a new job a couple days ago so i quit kelly right away. I hate factory work and didn't feel like giving a 2 week notice. Everything has been going fine but now i got offered an even better job and I accepted. I'm concerned because they are going to run an employment check. I clicked "do not call" on the kelly production job in my resume because I was still employed at the time. I'm scared if they do end up calling kelly services somehow that they'll mention how I abruptly quit and then get mad at me. So my question is: if the employment verification people do call kelly will they only state when i worked or will they mention how i quit without notice. I know a lot of big companies (like wal-mart) only state when you worked because they don't want to get involved in defamation law-suits and stuff. I was hoping Kelly services was the same way. Thanks for the help!
How long do employers (especially temp agencies/contract agencies) have to keep records of your employment? I no longer temp but used to and can't believe I stayed in that industry so long. What a scam some of these guys have working... I worked for one agency for two years back in the mid-90s. Same job assignment even. (Yes, that was an incredibly foolish thing to, especially considering I did not like temping but that's another story.) I digress... Before I got my current job, my employer did a background check on me. The investigator actually called me up asking me if I could fax them a copy of my paycheck stub for proof that I worked there. The reason? The temp agency, Kelly Services - a major corporation- had purged my records. The investigator explained that it is very common for agencies to purge records after a few years...I got the job but only because one of my employees from the agency remembered me and verified this. But gees..How is that legal? Is this just a temp agency thing or another way of them telling the temps how much they really think of them?
How long does a failed drug test stay with a job agency? I recently just took a pre-employment drug screening with kelly services. Everything went fine. What I'm worrying about is that a couple years back, I applied for a different job through Kelly Services. I took the drug screening for that job and failed. So my question is will that prior drug test fail affect me now even if my background check and recent drug screening come back good?

To what extent do employment agencies in the U.K have preference to non U.K workers? I have personally experienced Employment agencies in Glasgow who when i applied for work had foreign nationals interveiw me from Eastern Europe who clearly had a bias towards employing those from Eastern Europe and Africa, i am not being racist but stating fact, i can name two agencies Kelly services and Manpower. does any other people have similar experiences in the U.K? EDIT:ROBBIE KEANE IS GOD, I have lived and worked all over Ireland doing tradesmen jobs and non skilled and electronics works with agencies, there has always been a free movement of workers since the early 20th century between the U.K and Ireland, i dont think workers form these countries were ever an issue in either countries, however since the E.U accesion states came into the jobs markets in 2004 there has been a bias towards employment agencies in both the U.K and Ireland to employ Eastern European workers, and in many cases actually opening offices in Poland and Latvia to exclusivley recruit workers from these countries, in effect denying uk. and Irish workers any chance of earning a living, this is pure capitalism and another of the drawbacks entailed via being under E.U free movement of people/workers and employment laws. Eastern European workers will earn at least 4 times what they would earn at home and thats even on minimum wage, then tax back etc, it has rendered hundred
Craigslist Job Scam? Legitimate? This job is asking for a credit report which I think is weird. Do you think this is a job scam? Should I do the credit report? Unemployed college student? I am a college student looking for a job in Massachusetts. I am having great difficulties, and it is already the middle of June and I have nothing yet. I am looking for year-round employment until I graduate (which is very soon). I tried Kelly Services and had a disastrous experience, so I am skeptical of agencies. Can anyone give me any advice?
What kinds of jobs can one look into if they only had Tempt work at the Post Office & Art Museum Volunteer? The reason I'm asking is because I am one who has been in college and I took temporary work while I was in school quarter of the time. I did it my last semester of school. I work at the Post Office as a Postal Clerk. I started as a tempt worker. I only lasted for eight months and than I reapplied a year later and I worked for four months. I did not have a job from that year which was 2001 until 2004. I was in school full-time to consentrate on working on my two year degree. I now have my AA degree. I know I have a spotted work history because school and lack of experience. I also went to a four year University for my major in Studio Art. I did not work at all because of it. I had been enroll in school full-time or quarter of the time. I attende it for two more years and when I left it the spring of 2007 I was asked for a job at a Nursery Center and I took it. It only lasted for a few days and I was released. They want someone with a bachelor's degree in child care. I was asked by a godparent (relative) who owned the Nursery. I have been checking for jobs off and on. I have been applying for job on the jobsites such as Snaga Job, Job.com or Indeed.com. I have also put in for applications at department stores and a Art Supply Store like Michael's Arts and Crafts. This past year I volunteered at a Art Museum as a Office Aid labeling envolopes and helping with an Art project. I lasted for two days. I had to called check back with them to find out if they needed me for it or to keep going my last visit but I got "No Word" from the Volunteer manager. It been a year and I have been putting in for jobs online and at the Michael's Arts and Crafts store. I have submitted a resume to a few jobs I found on the Job.com and a Employment Agency my aunt told me about called "Reichard Staffing". She told me about a position as a Control Clerk. I had a resume submitted to them on the site. I have called their number to check to see if they recieve it. When I got the call back from them a lady told me that recieved it and said that the position applied for was not a good fit for me. I just recently I applied to the Art Museum again. I look them up online on their website and found that they are hiring for two positions They were curator and a part-time position as Visitor Service Associate. I applied for Visitor Service Associate. When I called them to ask if they were hiring a lady said that they are in the process of interviewing people. I asked her if they were accepting resumes . She then told me that I could have my application and resume mailed to them. I have done it. It has been two days and "No word" on anything! I guess I would have check back with them on my status on whether they have recieve my application and reesume or not. I have trying to thing of other places to apply but there nothing near by me that are hiring Sometimes I feel kind of sad that I can not seem to find or get a job that I truly like or am interested in now. All the job that may be hiring are only require experience. I have called stores like Family Dollar, Walmart or Sam CLub to find out if they are hiring and accepting application and the answer was we accepting applications but are not hiring. If there were it would be for one position which was Assistant Manager. I have registered and sign up for three Temporary Employment Agencies one I did in person called "Goodwill Job Junction and two more I had to do online. Those were Kelly Services and Randstad Staffing. I got a call from someone at Goodwill Job Junction about how I'm coming with my job search and I would tell I only had one job interview at a job I submitted my resume to online. It was called American Income of North Florida. I never heard back from about anything else about a job. I also applied to Micheal's Distribution Center for job for Material Handler. When I called them about a lady asked if I can make appointment with them for a Open House tour at 9:00 am on a Tuesday or Thursday. I tried to go on a Thursday at 9:00 am. My grandparents had to take me because I do not have my own transportation. We tried to find the place but we had trouble finding it. My grandmother had to called them find out were the Distribution Center was located. We did Not get there in time. IT was a long ways out from where I lived. It was almost like going out of town. I also had to reschedule the appointment. During that morning, my grandmother called my house and told my mom that a lady mention that people may work out of town. My mother told me not to worry about going or forget about it. I not sure what other jobs that are near by where I live that are hiring that I like to apply to. I would not want Nursery or Fast food. I would like something a little different from my past work. I work at Post Office they only hire people when they need them. I like to do a little office aid or gallery assistant I would like to add and respond to this first answer! Yes, I can be quite wordy at times. I have a habit of going into details! Sometimes I have a time expressing how I feel in writing because I allow my feelings to get in the way. I have a time expressing my thoughts on paper or even typing it on the computer to someone. I have not had any computer training in word and excel. I have had plenty of practice on typing or using Microsoft Word and a word processor! I have a relative (aunt) who helps me on how to write a Resume and a cover letter. I am NOT LEARNING IMPAIRED for this reason! I may be somewhat mentally challenged about what to say in a business letter or on a essay paper. I would often ask myself how would I word it?I have taken all of my English Composition, and Communication courses that I needed at the Community College! I finished with my AA degree! The Community College were I used go is no longer a two-year college; but a four- year college now! I would lik I would like to pick up where I left off. I would like to improve on my writting skills a little more. I went to a Visual Art School between semesters from the Community College in Jacksonville,Florida! I have worked as a Art Intern for a couple of months. I have done clerical assistance and helped water the gardens. I have never recieved any sales training when I was in school as a Art major. I was attending at the School of Visual Arts majoring in Illustration. I was only there for two years. I previously attended at the University of North Florida majoring in Studio Art. I was working on a BA rather than the BFA. I have NOT had any sales experience! I do not plan to Sale any paintings. I do plan to build up or submit samples of my artwork to a Art website(online). I would also like to include that I'm NOT developmentally disabled!!!! I may be slightly mentally challenge to some degree. You DO NOT know me!.. I have a relative(aunt) who helps and reminds me of how to do a res
are those who oppose obamas health plan comparing it to Canada because the accurate comparison is much better? Germany, I dont hear anyone comparing it to Germanys health care system---------- It's a talking point you hear regularly from President Obama--in order to fix the larger economy, healthcare costs have to be brought under control. That's not just rhetoric, there's plenty of empirical evidence to back up the claim, including two brand new studies. The first, conducted by the non-profit Rand Corp links the rapid growth in U.S. health care costs to job losses and lower output. Commenting on the study at BusinessWeek's Money & Politics blog, Cathy Arnst says The Rand researchers examined the economic performance of 38 industries from 1987 through 2005, in an attempt to assess the economic impact of "excess" growth in health care costs on U.S. industries. Excess growth is defined as the increase in health care costs that exceeds the overall growth of the nation’s GDP—a yearly occurrence in the U.S. The team compared changes in employment, economic output and the value added to the GDP product for industries that provide health benefits to most workers to those where few workers have job-based health insurance. After adjusting for other factors, industries that provide insurance had significantly less employment growth than industries where health benefits were not common. Industries with a larger percentage of workers receiving employer-sponsored health insurance also showed lower growth in their contribution to the GDP.... The rate of growth in U.S. health care costs has outpaced the growth rate in the gross domestic product (GDP) for many years. In 1940, the share of GDP accounted for by health care spending was just 4.5%. By 1990, it had reached 12.2%, and 16% in 2005, when health care spending totaled nearly $2 trillion, or $6,697 per person, far more than any other nation. This year health care spending is on track to equal 18% of GDP. That's largely the reason why so many American businesses are supporting reform. Wal-Mart, on the other hand, recently came out in support of a mandate on employers to provide health insurance, and the temp firm Kelly Services, which employs thousands, followed with a similar statement. Less noted has been the diversity of opinion among small and medium-size businesses. Many agree with the Chamber that a public insurance option would undermine the private insurance market and that requiring companies to provide coverage would impair job growth. Others say the current system is so broken that they are assessing whether to support the reform plans. The wait-and-see approach that many businesses are taking -- alternately skeptical and hopeful -- is a further sign that the alliances that previously scuttled health-care reform may be scrambled this time around, not just in the health-care industry but also in the business world at large. President Obama and congressional Democrats face formidable obstacles to their reform efforts, but one factor in their favor is businesspeople who may not be as inclined as they were in the past to bring grass-roots pressure against reform. Another new study, conducted by the progressive Center for American Progress looks at the potential costs for American families if the system isn't reformed. Health care costs are expected to grow 71 percent over the next decade, which will in turn drive premium increases for health insurance. Unless we take serious steps now to reform our health care system—in particular to reduce the rate of growth in health care costs—health insurance coverage will slip out of reach for even more individuals than the 52 million Americans who today are uninsured. This analysis shows that without health reform, average family premiums will grow to more than $22,000 by 2019, up from $13,100 today. In some states with higher-than-average premiums, family premiums will exceed $25,000 in 10 years. Of course, a family’s total health care costs will be even higher once co-payments and other out-of-pocket expenses are calculated into the total. The costs of not fixing this now are extreme, and have the potential to bankrupt not only individual Americans, but the country. It will continue to hamper job growth, which will in turn lead to more people unable to get insurance, which in turn will increase the premium costs for those "lucky" enough to have insurance. This is not an acceptable future.
Somebody tell me how to get out of here? im a teacher from calif who has been unemployed since the big budget cuts in 2008. in order to obtain employment i moved to west virginia to get my credential endorsed. ever since i got here i have been miserable. The only moeny i have is the money that is in my retirement account which is supposed to be in my old age. it is almost half gone now. As soon as i got here both my brother and his wife began to try to talk it out of me. They told me i couod live with them since they dont pay rent or utilities. that comes as part of my brothers contract for a job. they promised me that they would not mind helping me out, if only i pay for the financial responsibiities for my car. i do that. They both started in on me within less than one week of me being here. his wife wanted a 2500 loan knowing that she could not pay me back. my brother just wanted to be big boss of it demanding that i buy new clothes because my clothes were old and according to him people in west virginia really judge you. I kept telling them both that i was unemployed and had to make my money last. They both argued with me telling they knew i could afford it.His wife also figured that since she was letting me live here that she could use my car any time for any reason. (she was the one who invited me here even begged me to come)I kept trying to tell them that the car was all i owned in the world and i had to save the wear and tear on it since i was responsible for the price of its maintainance. I had jsut paid 400 for new tires. She continued to come up with every manipulative measure to try to make me think i had to turn over the keys. I finally broke down in tears and called my aunt in calif just for social support. his wife over heard the conversation and told my brother and now he is always letting me know in so many words or less that i am not welcome. he says You dont count or this is for me and my wife when ever i try to join the conversation for just a few minutes. so I am socially outcasted because i asked my aunt to help me defend my bank account and my car from them in addition i cant get a drivers license because i am not a resident. in calif I was allowed to use my mothers maiden name and not my birth name as long as no fraud occurred. you did not have to do a legal name change., in west virginia you do have to and i cant do that until i have been here a year.. I have to keep my car registered in calif and lie to my insurance company and make them think i live there still. I figured i could do that, i would just drive safe and not get stopped by a cop. I also got an infection in my toe which required several 1000s of medical bills because i am a diabetic and you can get an amputation over stuff like that. i dont have insurance because i am unemployed. a few week after my toe healed, my other toe nail turned all black and if it is not better soon i will have to run up another 1000s bill because that too could lead to an amputation. The other night. all of a sudden a deer jumped in front of my car and i hit it and it did severl 1000s of damage to my car. Ill have to pay 500 deductible. I have no control over when a deer will do that. i could very well have to pay 500 again and again because i hit some deer all of a sudden. the deer population in west virginia is exploded, plus ill be driving on snow and ice. I am desperate to get out of west virginia, I want to be safe from the deer that are hazardous and safe from my emotionally abusive familuy. I can get my credential endorsed in another state, but i dont know which states still hire teachers seeing that the economy is badk. I can also ask Kelly services for a transfer but i dont know which state to go to where there wont be so many deer making the road unsafe. we dont have that problem in calif but we dont have jobs there either. please help i am running out of money. I am miserable here. I dont know how to get out. I dont have anyone to turn to. my family in calif minimizes the issues. they tell me i imagine things and i over react i promise you i am not.

What is my options after failing a employee drug test? I was working for the temp service Kelly's at a spark plug plant here is Sissonville WV. I was really happy to get the job. I was looking forward to having a career there. I read there whole book and dealt with a difficult supervisor that was training me. They let me come the first night without taking the drug test. I went the second night after not having time to take the test. Than sadly here on Friday I went to take the darn test and couldn't pee. So I got let go fired for refusal of the test when I tried but couldn't take it. I told them I wasn't able to take the test. I had my son to get from school. I stupidly assumed they would understand and let me redo the test. But now they terminate me. I am on SSI for ADD and have been for a while. My wife works hard at Hampton Inn here for our family. We have limited income. So we fight a little for the bad happenings. I promise her I won't at all give up. So I got to try for employment or training. I took night shift at the plant so the kids wouldn't have to be in daycare which is expensive. I would have to wait until my youngest son only 2 now until 2013 to be in Kindergarten so I can get day time employment so I can do something. Any suggestions at all? Would you just wait and stay on SSI or look hard for jobs and maybe train for something. I am proud. Everyday I read to keep my abilities up. I am confident in myself yet have some insecurities. Jobs are few here for the not experienced worker. Suggestions? Thanks!

Are illegals taking the jobs American do not want? Do you believe illegals are taking the jobs Americn citizens do not want? How can it not be seen that illegals hurt the working men and women in this country? Are the facts being dismissed by the government? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Illegal Aliens Only Working Jobs Americans Don't Want? False Claim By Pro Amnesty Crowd May 18, 2009 RightSideNews.com By: Dallas Kelly With current unemployment in the US climbing and the flood tides of illegal aliens pouring across our southern border to join those already here, there would seem to be little hope of stopping the flow, much less reversing the devastating effects. The pro-amnesty groups continue to protest that the illegals are not taking any jobs from Americans, because they only "work at the jobs Americans won't take". This has been proven false. The facts are: There are 55,436,000 million Americans, ages 16-64, who are not in the labor force. - U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey; July, 2007 Real wages in the US are falling at their fastest rate in 14 years. - Financial Times; May 10, 2005 14 million Americans are unable to find full-time jobs in the current economy. - BLS The unemployment rate among the 12 million American adults who do not have a high school diploma is almost 9 percent. - BLS 9% of 12 million = 1,080,000. Well over 90% of the illegal aliens who come to this country do not have a high school education. That means that there are 1,080,000 unemployed Americans who are exactly the ones against whom the illegal alien competes for those same jobs. Forty percent of working-age African-American men are unemployed. - BLS 78.4 percent of the 24 million workers in service jobs are native-born Americans. -BLS 78.4% of 24 million = 18,816,000. Subtract that number from 24 million workers in service jobs and you get 5,184,000. Over 5 million service jobs held by non Americans. I have to believe that there must be some unemployed Americans who would be willing and able to work some of those jobs. While there is no direct evidence that all the over 5 million service jobs are held by illegal aliens, any that are contribute directly to the dire situation of the unemployed American. 71.8 percent of the 9.6 million workers in construction jobs are native-born Americans. -BLS 71.8% of 9.6 million = 6,892,800. Subtract that number from the 9.6 million workers in construction jobs and you have 2,707,200. 2.7 million construction jobs held by non Americans. Again, this was once the training ground for our young Americans, learning the craftsmanship of building, journeymen on their way to master craftsmen to construct, not only buildings for America, but a lifetime profession upon which to build their lives and the lives of their families. I am certain there are unemployed Americans in the construction industry who are displaced because of the illegal aliens who have usurped their jobs. 77.5 percent of the 9.4 million workers in manufacturing jobs are native-born Americans. -BLS 77.5% of 9.4 million = 7,285,000. Subtract that number from the 9.4 million workers in manufacturing jobs and you have 2,115,000. 2.1 million manufacturing jobs held by non Americans. Manufacturing jobs that for decades were done by the "working man", the American "working class", the American "middle class". Now, this invasion of the illegal alien, appears to be an undeclared war on America's less educated, youth, African-American and middle class. Just the above catagories account for about 11,086,200 jobs taken from the 14 million Americans who are currently earnestly seeking employment. They look every day, they have families depending on them, and there are over 11 million jobs that should be open to them. This country is not responsible for the woes and hardships of any other country. America is not to blame for other corrupt governments - we have our own government corruption to deal with. America is not responsible for the lack of opportunity in other countries - we have our own challenges of opportunity. America is certainly not responsible for the poverty in any other country - in point of fact America is the most generous nation in the world when it comes to charity, aid, support, donations and outright gifts to the poverty stricken countries of the world, even loans to those countries that America knew would likely never be repaid, so the debt was forgiven. America may be a lot of things but selfish and stingy are certainly not two of them. America should not be called to task for wanting, needing to take care of our own! Americans are not racist, or bigots or intolerant for demanding that the American government take care of Americans first! We have never turned our backs on the truly needy of other countries, but the time has come to make sure that we protect and
Article - Christian Executions What do you think about it? *Faith Under Fire Christian believers executed in North Korea* 'Refusal to worship Kim Jong-il, being caught worshiping God brings harsh Posted: January 21, 2007 1:00 a.m. Eastern By Michael Ireland Assist News Service Reports about four Christians being executed for their faith in North Korea are circulating in the Christian media. According to Mark Kelly of Baptist Press: "The Democratic People's Republic of North Korea is well-known as a country where Christians are persecuted for their faith. Because the government there keeps a tight lid on communication, however, only rarely does specific information leak out." Quoting the World Bible Translation Center's Gary Bishop in a conversation with Mission Network News, Kelly reports that one man who worked as an evangelist was executed after being caught with two Korean New Testaments in his possession. Bishop says North Korean Christians are becoming increasingly uneasy about possessing a Bible. He said: "A man that's known to be an evangelist. He's probably not an evangelist to anyone other than his family members, but he was caught with two of our Korean New Testaments in his possession and he was executed for that." Kelly writes that Bishop also told Mission Network News: "A woman and her grandmother were washing clothes when a New Testament fell out of the woman's clothing. Somebody reported it, and both she and her grandmother were quickly executed. And an army general who had become a believer was caught evangelizing men in his unit and was executed by a fellow officer." Kelly says Bishop told MNN that despite the oppression – or perhaps because of it – God seems to be working. Bishop said: "In response to a very, very oppressive government (and) human injustices, people are looking for an answer other than their own government. And, I believe that's awakening the resilience of believers in North Korea to say, 'We have another answer. There is another way to believe.'" MNN reports that thousands of North Korean Christians have been killed for their faith. Many more are in work camps. According to Bishop, there's no sign of the persecution easing any. "What you have is a leader who is proclaiming himself to be god. It's prescribed that they daily worship him. And, refusal to do that and being caught worshiping God just brings that kind of governmental response. And, as best we can tell, the tempo of that is not lessening." Bishop says it's obvious what that increasing pressure on Christians is doing to Bible smuggling. "It becomes more and more difficult to get a person to risk their life to carry those in to North Korea." With rivers frozen, it's a prefect time to smuggle Bibles into the country. While persecution continues, World Bible Translation Center has no intention of stopping the flow of Bibles into the country. "We do need to begin reprinting and get text ready as God enables people to take those in." North Korea: Country in Focus Population: 22,912,177 Government: Authoritarian Social Capital: Pyongyang Type: Restricted Nation According to the World Fact Book, quoted on the VOM Australia website: "Following World War II, Korea was split with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western oriented. Kim Jong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president Kim Il-sung, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population, while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In December 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled U.N. monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons." Report from United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Religious freedom remains essentially non-existent in North Korea, where the government has a policy of actively discriminating against religious believers, says the USCIRF. The group states: "The North Korean state severely represses public and private religious activities. The Commission has received reports that officials have arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and sometimes executed North Korean citizens who were found to have ties with overseas Christian evangelical groups operating across the border in China, as well as those who engaged in unauthorized religious activities such as public religious expression and persuasion. Although access to updated information about North Korea remains limited, by all accounts, including according to testimony delivered at the Commission's hearing on North Korea in January 2002, there has not been any improvement in the conditions for religious freedom in the past year." In recent years, the USICRF says, the government has formed several religious organizations that it controls for the purpose of severely restricting religious activities in the country. For example, the Korean Buddhist Federation prohibits Buddhist monks from worshiping at North Korean temples. Most of the remaining temples that have escaped government destruction since the Korean War are regarded as cultural relics rather than religious sites. Similarly, the Korean Christian Federation restricts Christian activities. Following the reported wholesale destruction of over 1,500 churches during Kim Il-sung's reign (1948-1994), two Protestant churches and a Roman Catholic church, without a priest, opened in Pyongyang in 1988, even though the absence of a priest for Roman Catholics means that Mass cannot be celebrated and most sacraments cannot be performed. Several foreign residents have reported that they regularly attend services at these churches and that it is clear that whatever public religious activity exists, such as services at these churches, is staged for their benefit. The USICRF reports: "Persons found carrying Bibles in public or distributing religious literature, or engaging in unauthorized religious activities such as public religious expression and persuasion are arrested and imprisoned. There continue to be reports of torture and execution of religious believers. Although the practice of imprisoning religious believers is apparently widespread, the State Department has been unable to document fully the number of religious detainees or prisoners. According to a press report, an estimated 6,000 Christians are incarcerated in "Prison No. 15," located in the northern part of the country. The Commission learned from testimony at its January 2002 hearing that prisoners held on the basis of their religious beliefs are treated worse than other inmates. For example, religious prisoners, especially Christians, are reportedly given the most dangerous tasks while in prison. In addition, they are subject to constant abuse from prison officials in an effort to force them to renounce their faith. When they refuse, these religious prisoners are often beaten and sometimes tortured to death." The organization concludes: "Officials have stratified North Korean society on the basis of family background and perceived loyalty to the regime into 51 specific categories. Religious adherents are by definition relegated to a lower category, receiving fewer privileges and opportunities, such as education and employment, than others. Persons in lower categories have reportedly been denied food aid. Thousands of North Koreans have fled to China in recent years. Refugees who are either forcibly repatriated or captured after having voluntarily returned to the DPRK are accused of treason; those found to have had contacts with South Koreans or Christian missionaries are subjected to severe punishment, including the death penalty."
