Removing duplicate items in an array list (java)? Hi. The example problem I am looking at is asking us to make an ArrayList and remove all of the duplicates from it. The example tells us not to use a HashSet (or anything with the word hash in it.) The code I have doesn't work properly.. as it removes some of the duplicates, but it removes "Greg", which isn't a duplicate. I feel like the method I have with the embedded loop is almost right, but I am missing one command. Excel List Question? I have information being pulled into Excel using a web query. The result looks like this: (A1) Adam (A2) Brad (A3) Chris (A4) OFFICER (A5) Dave (A6) Fred (A7) OFFICER (A8) Greg ...and so on for a thousand lines or so. Basically, it's a list of names, and if someone is an officer it says so in a cell beneath their name. Is there a way I can get a list of all of the officers? It is a list that changes daily, so I need it to be able to update with the excel query. The closest I could figure out was an index/match of (using the above format): =INDEX(A1:A8,MATCH ("Officer",A1:A8,FALSE) -1,1) However, to find the second one, the formula has to automatically adjust the range to A5:A8. I'm not sure how to do that. Any advice on how to make this work? Thanks in advance.
How many states don't allow convicted felons to resume the right to vote after serving out their sentences? It is my understanding that there are three states that currently allow felons to vote while they are still in prison serving out their sentences. I think there are 31 states that don't allow felons to vote while they are still on probation, but all the other categories of felons and what they are allowed to do in terms of their right to vote, I'm curious about. I know that the new Republican governor of Florida wants to give previously convicted felons the right to vote in his state despite the fact that this strict prohibition is what delivered the Florida electoral vote to George W. Bush in 2000. According to Greg Palast's book, THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY, the firm of CHOICE POINT was retained by Katherine Harris to put together a voter disqualification list that was so loosely and sloppily put together, that it disqualified voters who never were convicted felons but were listed as such when they showed up to vote. Should I move the name Romilly to my boy's list? I'm very against so called "unisex" names with the exception of three names; Vivian / Vivienne (Because of my Great Aunt Vivian who died at the age of 95; I'd only use it as a middle), Joyce (SO's mother's name; I'd only use it as a middle), and Ariel (My favorite movie as a child was The Little Mermaid; I watched it so much I wore three tapes of it out). Romilly is supposedly a "unisex" name. Started out as a French Place Name, then a Surname, then a boy's name, and then occasionally used on females. From what I found out it's familiar in England and totally unheard of in the USA. There is Romilly John, son of artist Augustus John. And Emma Thompson and her husband, Greg Wise, named their daughter Gaia Romilly. I've had it on my girl's list because I didn't know any of this. And now I'm reconsidering it, and wondering if I should move it to my male's list. The three "unisex" names I would use on females, I have legitimate reasons, while this one I wouldn't. Should I keep it on my females list, as one of very few exceptions? Move it to my boy's list? Or ditch it completely? I have found two pronunciations of Romilly; (ROM illy) and (RAH mi lee). It's Latin, meaning 'wanderer' or 'walker'. I'd personally rather move it to my boy's list or ditch it completely, rather than leave it on my girl's list.
