I am looking for a room, apartment, studio, basement doesn't matter for under 300 a month if all utilities are paid better for me. The place has to be for a couple not a single occupancy and I am looking for somewhere that is not shared by other people. Has the Fair Tax considered apartment rent? It looks like one possible sticking point that may not have been considered since, I suspect, most people who've done studies to come up with the FairTax are homeowners, who may not have thought of the apartment rent angle. Any comments? Is this something that needs to be re-thought or does the FairTax need a bit of a tweak? I personally think the FairTax is a great thing, and I do hope it passes sooner rather than later. Now, if only these clueless contenders (not counting Huckabee) for the presidency will actually take a look at it. I think it is irresponsible for them NOT to learn about it. Some people are not familiar with the FairTax, though they think they are because they are only thinking of one side of the equation. The other side is that embedded taxes will disappear. That includes Fica withholding, corporate income taxes, and every other tax we pay, which is why the FairTax is considered 'revenue neutral'. When that goes away, your income is bigger and things you buy are cheaper. Also, there are trillions of dollars that will be repatriated within months from sheltered accounts. The FairTax will encourage saving and investment. There will be no money you make that way, remember? The economy will be growing and, as it grows, it follows that taxes will gradually go down. The current tax system is not fair to our manufacturing, here, which is why they leave this country. Once the FairTax is passed, manufacturing will return. -Everything- imported will be subject to tax, as well as people in the shadow economy. BTW, I found the answer to my rent question, elsewhere.:)

Can you get your Apartment Rent Lowered when your lease is up if their new prices are cheaper? I have no hot water in my apartment and rent is due this weekend. What should I do? I got back to my apartment Sunday to find out that there is NO HOT WATER! So for the past few days I've either had to take my showers in the Wellness Center of my college or bear through a painfully cold shower at my apartment. Rent is due Friday, but I don't want to go pay rent for next month only to find out that they're going to take longer to fix it than they said. It would be one thing if this was the first problem, but it's not. Over the summer our dish washer didn't work for a full 3 months! It wouldn't let me fit it all above... Also over the sumer half the electric sockets and the ceiling light/fan didn't work in my roomies' bedroom didn't work for about 4 months too. The maintenance guys here are so lazy. The guy that fixed her fan was new and he was telling us about how the other guys just sit around and he couldn't believe that we went so long without a dishwasher because he knew those guys weren't working on anything. i don't live on campus. moving somewhere else isn't an option. i have a lease through April, then i'm moving to another city and transferring schools. and other than the current hot water issue it's not so bad here (now that the dish washer works haha!).

(RI) When multiple tenants are leasing an apartment, how is legal responsibility for rent divided? For reference, I live in Providence, RI. I am looking into getting an apartment with roommates, and hopefully this won't be an issue, but I am curious--if three people have their names on a lease as tenants, are they each automatically only responsible for one third of the total rent? Or, if one of those three neglects payment (but still remains on the lease), are the remaining two responsible for covering the entire cost? Also, a secondary and possibly related question--is it possible for a person to live in an apartment and pay rent, but not be signed on to the lease? I am asking this mostly due to issues with credit background checks (a potential roommate has poor credit, and I don't know if that would affect the probability of us as a group renting an apartment if he was signed on as a tenant). I'm not sure how these rules vary by state, but I used to live in Delaware, and if I recall correctly, the last place I lived had different forms for "tenants" (obligated to pay rent; credit checks run on application) vs. "residents" (legally allowed to live in the apartment, rent-paying or not).
