Best way to clean a mattress you bought from Craigslist?

I'm thinking of buying a mattress set from Craigslist--but before I do, I want to know if there's a way to thoroughly clean it, inexpensively. What needs to be done to keep from getting other people's critters?

  1. Gasoline and a match.
  2. Here is a thought for you and a few facts to go along with it (make sure you scroll down and read it all) it is all true I have seen this on the discovery channel.. •The weight of the average mattress doubles after ten years due to dust mite infestation! That’s 10% in weight each year. http://mattresszine.com/mattress-diy/getting-rid-of-bed-bugs/
  3. I agree with Ari R! Edit: And Jo S!
  4. My first thought was gas and a match just like #1 said - Really don't buy a used mattress - it's just not sanitary - if you really want some info on used mattresses and pillows - check the weight now of your pillow and then check the weight of a brand new pillow from a store - yours will be much heavier - they collect bed bugs and bed bug droppings, that after time weight down your pillow - it's really really gross... I shudder to think of what would be in an old mattress - I have a hard enough time sleeping in hotels... I vote NO!
  5. I believe it's against the law in most states to sell a used mattress.
  6. EW. You want to buy a USED mattress off of Craigslist? I am not trying to be mean but that is so disgusting. Do you realize that people not only sweat into their mattresses, but also have..."intimate relations". So basically you're going to be laying in complete stranger's fluids. Also, used mattresses carry these disgusting bugs known as "Chiggers". They bite your skin and cause you to get all these red, rash like marks all over your body. Is it really worth saving an extra $50? For someone who is so judgemental of other people, I would THINK you'd take a look at yourself and realize how disgusting it is. Guess not. Cheers! Enjoy your funky mattress love!
