Do all of the major job portals (monster, hotjobs, careerbuilder, dice) = a big black hole?

Isubmit hundreds of resumes and get very limited responses, if any. I have a strong resume and background, but it does not seem to help. Have no trouble selling myself either, just seem to be running into a brick wall with my results. Any thoughts/suggestions?

  1. Hi, Seriously something wrong with your resume. Try to rework on it for a better response. You can check out http://careerguide.careerdirection.info for some useful info and tips. Good luck!
  2. Youre resume should include keywords and not be more than one page unless youre a professional with a degree. I was hired at Law Firm by monster. Also, check if youre resumes are public they could be private.
  3. Try this: After you submit your resume, wait one week and call their Human Resources office. That'll show them that you're still interested in the job. After that call, gather the information they gave you. You should call the HR office every week (roughly same day you first called) and keep getting updates on the job. If you don't call, they think that you just submitted your resume and don't care about the job.
  4. I have the same problem. I have come to two conclusions: 1. Those sites are flooded with resumes and employers are quickly overwhelmed and only look through a certain number before giving up. 2. Some employers do not look through resumes on those sites but ask that you the job seeker indicate your interest. By making their work easier for them and submit your resume directly into their hot little hands. Good luck to you on the job search, at least I hope you have better luck than I do!

  6. I've come to the conclusion that unless you live in one of the major cities it lists on it site, that you are just about out luck. Even if you do, the sites seem so overloaded that you are basically better off talking to friends and reading local paper than you are using any website.
  7. The answer? It depends. Some people do actually get hired by submitting resumes to generalized job boards. Most (the large majority) do not. Why? Because they have millions of resumes. "Wait, I thought that was a good thing?" you ask. Only if you are Monster.com. If you are a higher level candidate, most recruiters will tell you to stay off the major job boards because they are black holes. We've spoken to many niche recruiters (specialize in a particular industry) that say you should avoid the big boards because they can hurt you more than help. If everyone has your resume, what recruiter wants to invest time with you? So, what to do? Find a niche job board and an executive recruiter in your particular industry. Play to your industry experience in order to get a leg up on the competition. Put yourself in the hiring manager or recruiter position. Would you rather search for a needle in a haystack or a needle in a sewing kit? It is easier to find the right candidate with industry experience in a niche job board. Good luck!
  8. I posted a resume online last January and received literally hundreds of calls within the first month. So depends on which field you are in, as well as your expertise in it. Research good resume building sites, dont follow the suggestions of your friends or coworkers about thier resumes. Bullet words that stand out and grab, as well as one page to most importantly KEEP IT SIMPLE. Just as we only have seconds to make a good impression, the same applies with resumes.
