I am still seeking a position utilizing my B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering but to no avail. Any advice?

I've been searching for a position for the past 2-3 years. After the first year, the volume of calls returned about my job search inquiries have decreased significantly; if I am lucky, I receive a call every 2 months for a phone screening. In person interviews are even rarer; I receive them approximately one every 3 months. Second interviews are basically non-existent. I am currently temping in the 'environmental' field helping to maintain the chemical stockroom inventory up to date; I open, scan, and close packages. I tried various web sites: aiche.org, indeed.com, careerbuilder.com, etc. Everyone wants experience; I can't provide 2-5 years from nowhere. HELP! Is it my personality? I have problems interacting with people. I have some work history gaps; can that worsen my situation? I am highly intelligent; I can provide some serious analysis, yet no one other than a company that just needs me for mundane tasks is willing to hire me. Am I flawed? Did I enter the wrong field?

  1. Try government agencies. Federal, State, local. Jobs will probably begin to open up in the federal government after Bush leaves office. How about FEMA? Try FEMA. EPA? There are jobs in the Federal government that just require a degree. A degree in anything. Here's the federal job website, in case you don't know it already: www.usajobs.gov

  3. My advice would be to go back to school for an M.S. degree. This will allow you more opportunities to get those jobs where you aren't just organizing data but actually researching and doing higher level work. Unfortunately in the sciences a BS really won't get you the jobs I believe you are looking for. But of course keep looking and keep employed, but do seriously think about continuing your education.
