casual position at the usps?

I have a full time job wal-mart and the post ofiice offer me a casual postion this week.(seasonal casual postion) making $15.00 per hour.They said if i miss the drug screening I will not be considered for future employment.Should i quit walmart?Or just get my foot in the door at the post office.How long does seosanl employees last?

  2. Take the USPS job! Are u kidding me? Walmart or USPS? Please. A female friend of mine was non-military and got an offer to work there in 1990 as a seasonal sorter. She's still there and full-time and she's single, owns her own home, has 3 nice autos, always has money, is always going on vacations as working at the USPS grants you some very good benefits and vacation time. If you plan to be a working stiff then there is no better job than this. Your co-workers are another story, as the USPS is known for keeping and protecting alot of crappy, mean, lazy employees.
  3. seasonal..... seasonal is wht it means. if you start now it would be after the holidays. i wouldn't suggest quiting a permanent job for any casual position.
  4. Get a job at the post office. It takes a while to go up in ranking, but the benefits are great.
  5. Do not quite any job to take a casual position with the Post Office. I recently worked for the USPS main distributation center in Sacramento and I can tell you it was a very demanding job. They work you 6 1/2 hours per day but it is 6 days per week every week. I know it sounds easy but by the time you get done with what you think is a short day you want to collapse not to mention working 6 days every week and none of it is overtime since it is under 40 hours. Also, as a casual employee you do not get holiday pay or Sunday differential pay and no benefits of any kind. Check very carefully about what type of job you are being offered. USPS likes to offer teasers like if you work hard we might keep you after Christmas and so on. Casual employees can only be worked a total of 6 months + 3 weeks per year so you will be out of work for the other 6 months. I talked to several casual employees while I was there and they have taken the test in-house and had good scores but still after more than 2 years are still casual with no benefits and only 6 months per year. Just because they give you a test does not mean you will go to permanent/career status. My advice is keep your full time job with its benefits. You may not be making the big hourly wage but if you add the year round employment / medical coverage /sick leave and other benefits you come out in front in the long run.
  6. I worked as a Casual clerk for the USPS for two years and the money was really great. Sometimes I worked long hours but the pay is great. Everyone says that that place is terrible but I believe that if you stay to yourself, speak to the people in your unit and just focus on making your money you will be ok.
  7. What the original person that posted the question never said was what type of casual job they were being offered. Also, where is the job located? If it is in a very populated area then the work will be very hard but if it is in a small area then the work will be a piece of cake If it is a clerk job then the decision is only about the lack of benefits and 6 days every single week but if it was as a mail handler then they also need to consider the physical demands of the job. I had no problem with my co-workers, they were great and very helpful and I really liked the job but it was the 6 days per week and still under 40 hours. That's a lot of gas and mileage if you are commuting. You'll be paying out a lot of money to Uncle Sam in taxes and also supporting the oil companies in your gasoline bill. They kept me under 40 hrs so there was no overtime and again casuals get no health insurance or any benefits. Also, are you willing to take the chance of being without work and benefits after the holidays or even after the limited 6 months that casuals are allowed to work?
