What is Section 8 housing? How do I report fraud?
My next door neighbor is a house renter who is committing Section 8 housing subsidy fraud. Also, this possibly includes welfare fraud as well, since nearly all Section 8 housing recipients are also receiving welfare benefits. I live in California. How do I report this and to whom? It saddens me to know some families legitimately need government assistance to keep a roof over their children's heads and my neighbors and horribly misusing a system that I am told has a very long waiting list. As a taxpayer, I refuse to simply "look the other way" and allow this abuse to go unreported. Please help! Any advice or info would be highly appreciated.

- idk - but you should do something. I'm like you - tired of paying for people to mooch off the government benefits that I'm FORCED to pay for! I'd start with the police, they might be able to direct you.
- Call your countys social services department. They do investigate, I have one who was investigated after a complaint (had a man living with her). You are right, there are families with children on a waiting list, as there is only so much to go around. I do not mind paying to help out families, but I resent "helping" people who really don't need it and are wasting my tax $.
- Section 8 is usually handled by the County Housing Authority (not sure which county you are in), but most County Housing Authority's have websites with their address/contact information and information how to report fraud. For example, the Housing Authority for the County of San Bernardino provides the following information: If you suspect fraud by a Section 8 participant, Public Housing resident, or landlord, you can put your concerns in writing and mail them to the appropriate office for investigation. Please note that the Housing Authority takes every complaint of program abuse seriously and that staff will investigate all allegations to the fullest extent possible. Information received is kept confidential and anonymous. * Reports of fraud abuse for Section 8 participants and/or Landlords can be mailed to the Housing Choice Voucher Program Manager at: 672 S. Waterman Ave. San Bernardino, CA 92408 * Fraud abuse pertaining to Public Housing can be mailed to the Public Housing Program Manager at: 672 S. Waterman Avenue San Bernardino, CA 92408
