Do they do a credit check when applying for section 8 housing?

After being on a waiting list for section 8 going on two yrs now i finally got an appointment in the mail from them, and even though i'm happy that they finally contacted me i'm worried that when i try to get an apartment they will do a credit check and bring up my car that got repod and an old apartment that i lost about 5 yrs ago thats still on my credit..

  1. Don't worry about that. If it is 5 years ago they won't look at it as a bad thing since it is so old. But on the other hand, if you have had similar credit issues since then, it could cause you problems. They do look at it on a case by case basis. And if that is all that is on there then not to worry; you will be fine. HAS is there to provide assistance and they will if you qualify. Just be honest with them when they ask you questions. If you lie, chances are they already know the answers and then they will assume that you are hiding other things thus jeopardizing you getting assistance. Hope this helps.
  2. I very seriously doubt that a credit check would be completed to GET the voucher for section 8. However once you get it and take it to the rental company of your choice, that indiviual manager could request ot run a check of your credit
  3. I am in Property Management in NC. I handle all Sec 8 housing for my company. We do a credit check but if you have negative credit it doesn't count against you. We check your previous rental references and if that is negative then you could be denied. We also get a reference from your caseworker. We take into consideration your sec 8 housing certification and your ability to pay. This also is only our company. You need to see what your state or local area requires as it does vary .
