How can I get access to my personal files at my local authority housing office?

- walk in and tell them you need to see them, by law they have to show them to you, even make copies if you wish it
- Have you heard of Watergate? Just a thought.
- Request them. If you're denied, file a FOIA request.

- The Freedom of Information Act should help. This act of parliament allows citizens access to government files and documents on a variety of subjects. I am not certain however, if it also allows access to local government files. Check it out anyway and good luck.
- you need to make a subject access request under the data protection act, this costs £10 andthey have to return the information to you in 40 days. They only have to give you copies of the personal data they hold on you, so anything they hold that identifies you specifically. In regard to records which are paper based they only have to give them to you if they are in a relevant filing system (ie they dont have to swearch for every bit of paper for a reference to you). start by writing to the data protection officer at the local authority and stating you would like to make a subject access request, offer to pay the £10 but dont enclose a cheque. they should return you their standard form to fill in. if you need more info or they arent being helpful go to the infomation commissioner www.ico.gov.uk hope this helps
- Hi, Best to ask in writing to your Housing Authority. Most have a policy of having it ready for you within a set time, say 1 working week. You are entitled to see your file but they are also entitled to have time to remove information on that file relating to other people, like a letter from a neighbour complainging about you, etc.(For that person's protection) PS No offence meant - just an example. They cannot refuse, if they do go to the Housing Ombudsman. Good Luck.
- Just quote the Data Protection Act not the freedom ofinformation act. You have a right to see all information about you held by any organisation. Just put a request in writing they may charge you £10 as an administration charge they are allowed to do this. Though this could be waved if you are on low earnings.
