Is there such a thing as affordable housing for people 55+?
I have heard that there are apartments and/or condos that are rented or leased out to people ages 55+ at affordable rates, based upon the person's income. I am looking for something in Orange County, California. I'm not looking for an old folks home...just affordable housing for someone that is 55 years old. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have no idea where to even start looking. Thanks. Affordable housing communities.

- Orange county Calif has some of the highest priced homes in the US. One bedroom apartments are about $1000 per month no matter what your age. You can find much cheaper apartments in Riverside County. You might try to apply for Section 8 rent assistance.
- FountainGlen in Rancho Santa Margarita 949-766-1620. Affordable bond rate one bedrooms for active seniors 55yrs or older rent for $872 (wait list but worth it). Your annual income can not exceed $27,500. Keep in mind there are different types of affordable units. Those who accept section 8 government housing vouchers (call OC Housing Authority). Tax credit properties, they do their own paperwork and then there is the city bond program like the one at FountainGlen. GOOD LUCK!
- Here is a list of affordable communities in Orange County: http://www.ochousing.org/rent_afford_listb.asp Don't be put off by seeing "Waiting List" or "family housing". Call them - this list may be hopelessly outdated and you never know, one of them may have an opening. Hope that helps, good luck to you!
