moving into a not nice neighborhood. but already given downpayment. what should we do?

we are living in a studio apt with our newborn. we decided to move into a bigger apartment since our baby is growing up. we went to Apartment Finder and they took us to this one bedroom apt that was far from my school, far from my hubby's work. back then, we were hurrying to move because we're having problems here in our studio. so we paid the downpayment. the problem is, we found out that the neighborhood was not good and we found a better place near school and work by ourselves. tomorow they are waiting for the security deposit. how can we turn back? what should we tell them? can we get the downpayment back? because we need thst money ofcourse. and also we need to move out here in 5 days. help pls?

  1. I would consult an attorney. (Just to ask the question over the phone: Have I lost the money? How can I get it back?) You may have lost your money. Try to contact the APT as soon as possible, tomorrow...and ask about the deposit. Don't tell them you "found a nicer place to live"! that will, DUH, make them mad! I hope you get it back, Hon...
  2. This happened to me. I rented an apartment without getting to know the neighborhood because I had a summer internship somewhere. Only to find out it was a black neighborhood and I was the only white person there and the apt was right on the same corner as a "corner market"..you know where people hang up. No way was I going to take it and I had to get a lawyer for free through the priest in my church to write a letter demanding my money back because I would not move in. When I went to the office where I rented it from who told me it was a nice neighborhood (I was in another city and didn't know anything about the neighborhoods) the lady who rented it to me hit me! She hit me when I demanded my money back. What a horrible story. I wound up not doing the internship because I had no place to live.
