Can a Wi-Fi laptop be traced?
Hello, in my apartment I am using someone else's Internet via Wi-Fi, can i be traced? And the guy really deserves it, since he has been wakeing me and my family up in the middle of the night for the last four years with noise, doors slaming etc. he just got Internet put in, in fact, i saw the AT&T guy out hooking it up the day he got it. but, could he trace me? I mean, since i am not using wires to connect like most people, but sending it thru the air, is there exact pinpoint location finder? Thanks to any answers ok, when it comes to personal info on my pc, i do not have any on it. even Windows is in the simple name "User" i do not store any personal info, and yes my old Windows Millennium Edition laptop has the latest security programs.

- it can if it doesnt have a security code (but they usally do)
- No he couldn't determine your location besides the fact it is somewhere within a range of 300' of him. Best he could get is your wireless adapters MAC address, and your computer name on the network. So unless your computers name has your name in it? To determine a computer's name, right-click My Computer on the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Computer Name tab.
- if hes too dumb to lock you out, then hes too dumb to trace you
- He cannot find where you are, but he could see that there was a device that wasnt his was connected to his wifi
- As far as I know, there's no way for him to trace where the laptop actually is, but he would be able to find the MAC address of the laptop, and perhaps more, if he is tech-savvy enough (not very likely from your description), and as long as you use it in moderation, I doubt he'll ever know.
- Sure he could. He could look in his router, get your IP address, get your computer name, and depending on the security of your computer, hack your PC in return to find out who you are. However, if his internet Wi-Fi is wide open, chances are he is technically adept to figure it out, thus probably cannot. Edit: He could also get a Wi-Fi monitor and get an idea of the distance. He could use it and walk to your door and get a strong signal, knowing it was from you. However, that is not likely, because of reasons stated above.
- Yeah, it would IN THEORY be possible to track you down, but in reality, it's never gonna happen. Leech away, my friend.
- Tracing has nothing to do with wires; it has to do with IP Addresses; and every computer connected to the internet has one.
- The biggest problem is this. If you purchase anything on the internet while online, there is an isp record. If you do anything illegal, there is an isp record. Legal questions aside, reliability is another reason to pay for your own access. If you are a heavy user or need the Internet to work from home, relying on a connection that your neighbor could shut off at any moment is probably not a good idea. There is also the possibility that someone could have set up the unsecured connection as a trap. Experts say it's possible for the network subscriber to gain at least partial access to your computer, read your e-mails and see the pages you visit if you are using their connection. Any personal information you send online could then be compromised. So while pirating your neighbor's Wi-Fi it may seem like a good way to siphon a free service, you may end up feeling pretty stupid if you get a summons for sneaking a peek at the latest sports scores or your favorite Web sites are the topic of conversation at the neighborhood Christmas party. - Yes, you can be traced. This is difficult to answer. I don't know if you can be fined or jailed, but from what you said it seems like his network doesn't even have a password set up. That makes it his fault because he is not using a wep password encryption to block his network. But he is paying for the internet, not you.
- if he is tech savvy he can. make sure you turn off the network discovery so that your computer name won't pop up when you log on into his connection
