Why do most apartment rentals have floor carpeting?
I think it's a hassle both for tenants -who have to keep it like new and it may worsen allergies- and for the landlords - who have to get it professionally cleaned or replaced when a tenant moves out. Is there a particular reason for the carpeting?

- Because it dampens sound between floors and is least labor intensive to install and replace. Hard floors allow too much noise between floors and tile has to be repaired. Carpet is cheap when bought in bulk, and is not as hard to install as you may think.
- Its the cheapest type of floor covering, much cheaper than tile or wood. And I have lived in some rental houses where the whole house was carpeted in remnants, every room a different color/kind of carpet.
- i know what you mean! we moved in 6 months ago, and with 2 small kids, stains are inevitable. i've heard horror stories about what some people do to their apartments, so maybe it's just cheaper to replace with low quality carpet that wood floors. . .:)
- Apartment enhancement ( it's a tax write-off), "it's not your place, it's theirs", you're only a "Tenant". And they'll do whatever it takes to make it "Appealing" to the eye just to "Reel" you in. $600.00 a month versus a carpet replacement that can be written off, is a far cry from being a hassle. This is why a "Deposit" is installed in the "Lease" just for such damage. The majority of apartment leasees' do not receive their "deposits" back because of damage or replacements.
