How old do you have to be to rent/lease apartment/check room in hotel?

Some places say that they only let 21+ people check out hotel rooms/ rent apartments.

  1. Depends which hotel or apartment in which state. Usually 18 or 21. My husband and I traveled to Alabama one year. We were 20 and had the cash in our pocket to pay a hotel room, and also a credit card to pay for it. Because we weren't 21 we couldn't stay there, period.
  2. Depends on where you're staying. I've rented my first apartment at age 18, although my fiance was 23. Both our names were on the lease. I'm not sure about hotels, but now that I think about it...alot of kids on prom night check into hotels. I guess it all depends on the state/town/ and hotel/landlord.
  3. It depends on the individual policy of the individual hotel chain. Sometimes chains will cut you a break if they can tell you've been traveling. I was on my way from Arkansas back to Florida when I was 19 and had to check into a hotel. They initially didn't want to rent to me until they realized I was really from out of state and I had really been traveling 14 hours already, and I told them that I really wasn't comfortable chilling at a rest stop. The manager relaxed the rules in that situation. Most apartments will rent to you at 18, assuming you qualify with their individual policies, as the situation is dramatically different. You're going to be there for an extended period of time, not just one or two nights.
