I might move to florida, but looking at apartment reviews has scared me. Are they all full of COCKROACHESSSS??

Is it possible to get a decently priced apt. without roaches?

  1. WOW I KNOW i lived in Jacksonville for 4 years and roaches are a big deal. They are large too. If you love an apartment I would suggest you ask to get it sprayed on a regular basis as a part of your lease aggreement.
  2. Florida is roach country....even mansions have them...and they are huge. As noted by another submitter, it is really necessary to have regular sprayings scheduled. Weather is worth it, tho, if you enjoy heat and sunshine.
  3. Wait until you see a love bug infestation like there was last Memorial Day on the West coast. Clouds of those things were EVERYWHERE! Small price to pay for living in paradise.
  4. No, not all apartments are overrun with cockroaches. Anyone can have cockroaches & it doesn't mean people are dirty either. Cockroaches can hop a ride to your home in grocery bags, etc. When inquiring about an apartment, ask the manager if regular spraying for cockroaches is done & when the last time was that the apartment/apartment complex was sprayed. Go so far as to ask for a receipt from the company who sprayed. He should be able to show you. Here in S.C. we also have cockroaches that are SO big that you can put a saddle on them, but we are on a regular schedule for having our home, outdoor workshop, & lawn sprayed by Terminix. It's not that expensive & is well worth it.
  5. no not all apartments in Florida are full of roaches...but...here are somethings to consider. First of all FL is a swamp there are all kinds of bugs. Secondly being in an apartment you can be a total neat freak and have roaches because of dirty neighbors. Now here are somethings you can do about it. First of all spraying does help, so does being clean. But the absolute ultimate way to get rid of or protect against roaches is to pump boric acid in to the walls. I know this sounds extreme, but it is not harmful to people (they used to use it to clean out the eyes of a new born) and is even used in some laundry detergents. As for the roaches themselves. The huge ones are called Palmetto Bugs and you will still come across them (lol watch out they fly) the ones that will give you infestations are the tiny little German Roaches, those little bleepers suck. But Florida is awesome you just have to know how to live here.
  6. More than likely the bug you're talking about is the Palmetto bug. They're huge and are very common down south but you don't *have to get infested with them. I lived in Florida and didn't have them, though many people I knew did. Here is some information you might find helpful: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IG082
  7. There are plenty of apartment with and without roaches... Careful most folks are not being able to make the difference between a german cockroach and a palmetto. When people say the roaches are big, they are referring to the palmetto bug which are attracted by water pipe leaks and the german roach by bringing food and/or furniture already infested. Both types can be avoided by regular repairs and treatment that can be found in stores. Living in Florida mean to get rid of your garbage daily put everything in airtight container not to attract them. With the high humidity and sun year round it's the perfect environment for them to be anywhere. A old saying is that if you see one, there is already a million of them. Just make sure that on your agreement with your landlord some kind of extermination will be done on a regular basis.. As a landlord, the outside and inside of his property should be treated. But also you have to work on your side to keep it clean and free of bugs.
  8. good luck
