apartmentratings.com is a great website, however it only lists a few of the apartments in philadelphia. Many people do not know of these websites, so some ratings are old. You could also try apartmentreviews.com-again, same senario here. It is hard to get ratings on apartments in philadelphia. Your best bet is to go to the apartment and see for yourself. Check out the neighbors. Do they appear clean? Does the hallway reak of stentch? Is there trash lying around on the property? Are the walls, frames and floor sturdy? How old are the appliances in the kitchen? Do you see signs of roaches or mice-such as old traps, roach hotels and mice poo in the corner? Are the tenants happy or pissed to see the landlord or are they flagging him down for repairs? These are all telltale signs of the landlord and the property. Many apartments around here are old, and living in a unit with a bunch of other families increase the rodent risk. Stay with private landlords and houses that have been converted into apartments, they are usually roomy and you get a good deal for your money. I also recommend trying the philadelphia suburbs like Delaware or Bucks County. Many good deals, close to the city without being in the city and dealing with city traffic/crime problem. Also, there is plenty of transportation to get you in town. Good Luck!
