I want to open a studio in Vancouver for reiki, massage and other healing therapies.?

Any small business help is much appreciated. Also, where should I look to settle in Vancouver (moving from Toronto). Should I get a 2 bedroom apartment? Can I even rent a studio/living space in one unit? Help!

  1. I live in Vancouver, so I can help. Yes you can rent studio/living space units. trouble is most of them are located in areas that would not provide the clients that you need. They are mostly used by musicians, artists, etc. And foot traffic is nearly non-existent. I don't know what your financial situation is as to where I could suggest to look for accommodations, and our transit system is pretty good. If you have a car you have even more choice in location. Vancouver already has an abundance of business's like yours, and the people who live in a couple of particular areas would not even consider using your services. I can help you to find what you need, please email me and I will help. Have you thought of providing your services as an in home business??? I don't think you would have as much competition and it could be very lucrative, If you are wanting a 2 bedroom apt with the idea of using 1 room as your studio, BAD IDEA.
  2. There are many benefits and problems with working from home. First off do you have pets? Friends sleeping over often? Like cleaning every day? Enjoy inviting strangers into your home? I did home based massage for a few years and got really sick of constantly cleaning, having clients that would linger or comment on my personal things and generally invade my living space. Now that I have a separate studio I am much happier and can leave my work behind. Working from home is cheaper and really cuts down on commuting expenses and can be very personal. The down side is the loss of privacy and inability to separate work from free time. My advice is to get a part time job somewhere where you will make alot of good contacts: health food store or health clinic or even a coffee shop. This will take the pressure off of you to make your business successful overnight and help you to build your contacts. It takes at least 6 months to build a private massage practice so plan on this when calculating your budget.
