Any good, safe apartments in Central New Jersey?
I will be moving to Central New Jersey near Rutgers Livingston Campus. I checked for apartments on rent.com, and apartmentguide.com. The prices are all high but that was expected but the ratings on apartmentratings.com for all the apartments that I've looked at are absolutely frightening. Does any one have any experience with a good, clean, affordable and SAFE apartment complex in Central NJ (preferably near Rutgers livingston campus)? Thank you.

- I live in Sayreville, NJ, which is about 10 miles from Rutgers Livingston. I looked in New Brunswick at apartments and they are trying to clean up the place, although right near Livingston is still kinda sketchy. I would not live in downtown New Brunswick. There are some great places to eat there but many of the complexes are still section 8 and there are problems with break ins. Try living a little further away. There are two right around Easton Ave. One is the Colony House and the other is a high rise building. I can't remember the name but it is right on Easton Ave. Easton Ave goes right into downown New Brunswick by the main Rutgers bookstore on Albany. I always see the Rutgers buses around there so you can catch a ride to the Livingston Campus pretty easily. I worked in Somerset, which is at the opposite end of Easton Ave. I commuted from Sayreville. It's not a bad commute, although traffic can be a bit rough. My company moved to Piscataway. Piscataway is also home to several Rutger's owned buildings. If you don't mind driving, look in the surrounding areas: East Brunswick, Piscataway, Sayreville, Old Bridge, Edison, and Somerset.
- I used to live in an apartment complex in Watchung, NJ that was very nice. It was called Crystal Ridge apartments. I also noticed some nice apartment complexes in South Bound Brook NJ. SBB is very close to Rutgers New Brunswick. For Rutgers Livingston, I would also look in Piscataway for apartments.
- Hubby & I used to live in an apartment complex in Piscataway, and my sister & her hubby lived in a neighboring apartment complex. Neither of us had a great experience. They were older buildings and had the usual repairs needed-but then we got roaches. Both apartment complexes had a series of bulgaries and auto theft/vandalism. I was terrified of the basement laundry room so I ended up going to a separate laundrymat altogether. My sister's actual apartment was robbed and unfortunately all of her valuables were stolen. We frequently heard of car thefts and break-ins. My sister & her hubby did relocate to an apartment on the Sayreville/Parlin border. They fared better at that apartment, and felt safer because they had an infant by that time. You might do better looking at apartments that are not in a complex, but in a 2 or 3 family home. It might give you a better sense of security knowing this is someone's private home and they want to maintain its value. My friend got lucky with renting the downstairs unit of a 2 family home in Perth Amboy for dirt cheap. It was easy access on and off the highway to get to Rutgers. Good luck!
