How to become a mail carrier?

I really want to apply to become a mail carrier. I know you have to take an exam, and I get on usps.com/employment all the time. Does there have to be an opening for the job to take the exam. Do you know if you can go to the Post Office and do it? Please help.

1. You take the exam on line, not at the post office. You can apply even if there are no current positions available. They will retain your application for 1 year
