How to apply for mail carrier?

I really want to apply to become a mail carrier. I know you have to take an exam, and I get on usps.com/employment all the time. Does there have to be an opening for the job to take the exam. Do you know if you can go to the Post Office and do it? Please help. I heardyou can take it online, but where? If you know can you copy the site and paste in on an answer please? My b/f talked to a fill-in mail carrier of ours that he knows and he said something about he thinks you could do it online or go up to the your local post office, but that's about all the information I got.

  1. Once or twice a year, or less often, the post office will publish an ad in your local newspaper, about the location and time for the exam. Last I heard, you can't take it online. YOu have to do it in person, and they ONLY do it once in a great while.
  2. This is not as hard as most people believe it is. I work for the USPS part-time on the weekends. There are two sections to the post office: 1)City Carrier-much harder to get hired on as test is only 1-2 every three years. 2) Rural Carrier- much easier to get hired (if your office needs help). a) just go to your local office and ask for an application for employment. Tell them you are interested in a TRC/RCA position (the job is the same the pay is different it just depends on if you took the test or not) they usually have test for Rural Carriers every 3 months. But as a TRC you can start work right away. Make sure your driving record is clean, no drugs, and you have a car you can drive when riding in the passengers seat.
