How do I go about switching a career from engineering to business?
Right now I have a bachelors degree in electrical engineering and in the future I might leave engineering to pursue a business career in finance or accounting. How would I go about doing this? I plan to get a MBA so I think that would help with the switch. Do I need to get a bachelors in accounting or finance? I was curious to see if there was anyone out there who has made a major career switch from engineering to business OR anyone that has made a major career switch that is unrelated (eg: finance to dentist) and how they went about it.

- depends on what area of business you want to get into but get the MBA and you'll be on even footing with everyone else. no need for a bachelor's in accounting or business.
- I made the switch from engineering into management. (not business management, but close) and I have the following advice: Make the switch. An MBA is a help, but what is more important is that you realize how closely related engineering and business really are. Engineers use a methodical and structured method of creating/building/designing products. Business executives use a methodical and structured method of producing selling those products. Engineers rely on math and empirical evidence to support their design process. Business executives rely on math and empirical evidence to support the business decisions. Engineers perform site surveys, develop requirements, create estimates, schedule, and see a project through. Business executives perform market surveys, develop requirements, create estimates, schedules, and see a project through. And it goes on and on... What do you really need to know? A little about commonly accepted accounting practices, a bit about personnel management, something about marketing, but you will get all of that from your MBA studies. Best of luck.
