What is the best career choice for an enlistee in the Air Force?
Im about to head to my local recruiting station and I was wondering what the best all around career is in the AF? Im leaning towards as few such as Intelligence or Aircraft Maintenance. I want the chance to travel, be stationed somewhere that somewhat resembles a social life every now and then and have future career possibilites once I'm finished. Any thoughts or suggestions? All our welcome, thanks!

- If you can get involved in electronics of one kind or another it will not only serve you now but in the future when you get out. There are jobs in computers, general electronics, radar, and so on. I studies radio installation and repair and I turned it into a business once I left the Air Force. Go down the list and see which one suits you.
- Nursing or trades people are always in demand with all the services. Paramedics or some kind of maintenance trade, plumber, electronics, and basic mechanical technicians. they often need good ones the best and are competitive for places, however are always complaining people that do these jobs are paid so well as civilians they do not want to come back or serve full time.
- :-) The Air Force is great and full of opportunities. It is important that you consider what would be best for you in the Defence Force and later in the civilian world. Intelligence is a great choice (hint hint lol) but can be limited to a desk job unless you're on field. Another career choice to consider is something like Aeronautical Engineer perhaps? It depends if you are considering general service or becoming an Officer. Either way, choose something that you will enjoy or that interests you. Enlisting is different for each country, but to my experience they will test you on your aptitude (among many other things) to see what field you are most suitable for :-) Have fun, enjoy it and good luck
- It doesn't matter, any job in the Air Force will label you as a wuss.
- If you want to travel, aircraft maintenance isnt the best bet. You are usually held down to one airframe (type of plane) and if that plane is only at one or two bases, well then you are stuck at that base. For travel, although a sucky job for the most part, Security Forces are at EVERY SINGLE BASE. So are services, but again, a sucky job unless you like making breakfast for people. I am in civil engineering and we are at most bases. The travel has been great, but the work isnt everyones cup of tea. Its all manual labor with not much glory. But we travel ALOT. I have loved all over the world, and am well aquainted with the middle east. Intel is decent, but your gonna be stuck behind a desk.
- A X-ray Tech or a MRI technician. Those fields are always open, and MRI technicians make a lot of money in the civilian world. When I was in the Army my roommate was an MRI tech. While he was in he got his civilian certification and worked weekend and holidays in a local hospital making double and triple time. He made more money in his part time gig than he did in the army lol.
- Do you want a skill when you get out? Then Computers or Electronics. Or if you stress free & easy promotions, try MWR.
- Aircraft Maintenance is a great choice if you want to travel. It also teaches you a skill you can use when or if you decide to get out. You just have to ensure that you get a guaranteed job as a 2A5X1 - HEAVY Crew Chief. Make sure you get a contract. If your are a FIGHTER crew chief you will not get to fly with the jet when it goes off-station. If you get a job as another specialty like jet engines, avionics or hydraulics, you will not have an opportunity to travel nearly as much. After a year or so on the airframe you will have the opportunity to fly with the aircraft all over the world. The C17, KC135, KC10, C5, C130 all go everywhere, all the time. They need maintainers to fly with them. You would get a chance to travel like you could never imagine and get paid well for doing it. If you get sick of travelling after a few years you can volunteer for a "backshop" duty and knock out some school. The Air Force has the highest education rate for a reason. It also offers 100% tuition assistance up through your Masters. Trust me - this is what you want to do....
