Is it a good idea to mail out your resume to employment agencies?

I am currently looking for a job and have tried to apply online, in person, and networking. I usually go to a staffing service in person, but this time I am thinking about mailing a cover letter and my resume to an employment agency which I have never done before. Is this a good idea? What are the chances of the recruiters looking at your mailed resume? Need advice, thanks in advance!

  1. If it gets you only one job, then it's worth it.
  2. Can't hurt, shows initiative and worst case scenario you're only out for a stamp, an envelope and a piece of paper. Put a good generic cover letter with it explaining your skills (be as versatile as possible).
  3. It's an excellent idea. But you might want it to be a general information type of resume - not a copy of one tailored for a particular job. You should have at least one of those available. When you send it out you should include a cover letter which details what types of positions you are seeking and whether or not you would consider relocation. By doing this you will help the agency to find a suitable position for you which could be in another city. Some of the better agencies are connected not only coast to coast but worldwide as well. They all have their own potential employer contacts. The more information you can provide them the better job they will do for you. Good luck.
  4. It'll do no harm - you might get lucky and be the right person at the right time, if not, they'll have it there for when they are looking.
