Is there a way to find affordable housing in Brooklyn Heights?

I've always dreamed of living in that neighborhood, but renting seems soooo high. Is there a way to find affordable living (not in cardboard box) on a $40,000 salary other than Craigslist (scammers) or brokers (fees)?

1. Maybe try contacting some of the bigger local churches. With times being tuff, parishoners might need additional help i.e. renting a basement or such. . . Call & ask. The churches will eventually find someone for you. Once in the neighborhood, you stand a better chance of learning what's what.
