How many months upfront should I pay to get discount on apartment rent?

I rent an apartment in Texas. How many months upfront should I offer to pay to get a reasonable discount on rent? What percentage should I ask for?

1. You probably won't GET a discount unless the particular place you're looking at specifically says so. The only thing you MAY get is a lower security deposit because they're getting all that rent money up front.
2. paying a full year in advance MIGHT get you a 1-5% discount IF you're lucky
3. While you can haggle at a garage sale or a flea market, trying to do it with your landlord is just tacky AND unless you're in an area where the rental market is terribly depressed, it will get you nowhere. If you want to do it, just ask your landlord or property manager if they discount rent if it's paid in advance, and if so, by how much, rather than trying to talk them down.
