- Rotastak (tubes etc) is good for syrians. You should have sawdust and bedding ready and buy whatever food it has been eating from the pet shop.
- if ur hamster doesnt have the opportunity to do monkey bars across the top of a wire cage u are definetely gonna miss out. my new hamster is a little vampire, totally psycho and will not be tamed. but she has started to do the monkey bars and its worth having her. when u buy ur hamster the people in the pet shop can advize u as to what u will need. have fun.
- a good small wire cage would be good. hamsters are low maintence so no biggy.
- A wire cage is the best! It provides great air flow that aquarium tanks can't provide. I know Syrian hamsters have no problem getting through tubes, but I am skeptical about all those tube homes. I have heard stories of them chewing their way out. Some get stuck, and they are a pain to clean. I recently ordered this cage from petsmart http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752679&cp=2767038.2769317 and will be useing it for my future Syrian. Its very roomy too, unlike most of the Critter Trail cages.
- I would get a cage like this: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753316
