how can i know if this is a scam or not?

i was looking on gregs list for a motorcycle and i found one so emailed the guy and wrote back saying that he is in alaska somewhere. he said he is in the military... he wants to do the transaction trough ebay's buyer protection program but i've never used that before... so how can i know its not a scam?

1. you never know if its scam till its too late and the person steals your money or whatever and gets your personal information so i wouldn't do anything that i wouldn't know what im doing in case it is a scam
2. hi, Yes it is a scam. NO COMPANY LIKE EBAY, CRAIGSLIST, YAHOO doesn`t have a protection program. So yes this is a scam. Be safe
3. If the person who wants to pay for the motorcycle for a higher value, then it's a scam. Don't fall for this. Just terminate communication with the scammers right away and don't go through with the deal.
4. I got essentially the same exact email after posting on craigslist. what is the chance of lightening striking twice? it is a scam.
