Is it best to get an apartment or to rent a house?

My husband and I might PCS to FT LEWIS in Feb. We will hopefully only be there for 6 months, but in those six months, should we get an apartment or rent a house? We could really save some money by getting us a teenie tiny apartment and collecting on BAH, but we have two small dogs and any chance to give them a yard to play in is crucial. Then again, it's only 6 months, what should I do?

  1. I would get the apartment. but then you are looking at how much it will cost you to pay for pet rent at that apartment. The total of the apartment and pet rent could add up more than renting a house. I would financially plan the two out and go from there. Good luck!
  2. Call or email the local chamber of commerce and ask if there are any apartments complexes that have apartments available for a six month lease and that take pets. Check with Army One Stop too. What I had to do one time was the apartment I rented was a one year lease. I was in it for three months. I wound up having to sublet the place so I wouldn't lose any money. Check and see if anything like that is available.
  3. There are fees associated with having pets in apartments. Also the added worries about them using the restroom indoors. You can probably save about $350 a month. Average rent for a small apt would be about $600 and for a house it would be $950. Over 6 months, that is $2100. Since it is temporary, I would save the money and go with the Apt., unless there is someone you guys wouldn't mind renting a room to.
