What do you think of employment agencies?

So apparently someone from an employment agency (Renaissance Resources, Inc. based out of Chicago, IL to be exact) called me today b/c they saw my resume on career builder and were interested. Do you think they can be trusted? I'm from Ann Arbor, MI, so it's kind of weird that they'd contact me so far away, right? I don't know anything about these types of places. Thanks for the tips!

1. I've come into contact with some of these places through ought my career searches and have never once landed a job through them. Maybe that has just been my experience and others have better stories to tell, but I just see them as a waste of time. I have even come across some of these recruiters who are extremely rude and condescending. I do find it odd that they would call u from such a far distance, but perhaps that agency is recruiting for a position in your area. I'd be leary.
2. When looking for a job you need to build a network. Include everyone who could provide a lead for a job opportunity. Learn to make your own decisions. Give the agencies a try. The worst that could happen is you will have an opinion about them. Don't pay someone for helping you get a job. This is a sure sign of B S. Good luck.
