- get a second floor apt for when you flood
- Find an apartment locator. Tell them your desired areas & amenities & they will find places. You can still read reviews on them & go from there.. Most apts in Houston are either very well kept or are total dumps in the ghetto so BE careful, esp around North Houston. DO NOT LIVE in a place called Greenspoint (area). They call it Gunspoint for a reason. Good luck
- I live in a complex called Broadstone WestWay Park. I love it here. The apartment is new (about 3 years old) and very nice on the inside. High ceilings so the rooms look a little bit bigger. It's off of the Beltway and Clay Road. Other than this area you can look out in Cypress, Spring, The Woodlands, Galleria & Museum district (if it's in your budget). There are a lot of good apartments out there.
- i used to live at Camden apartment. they have apts all over Houston, the website is camdenliving.com. they are nice.
- Before I moved, I ordered an Apartment Guide (that fat booklet with apartment listings) from their website. It was something like $5, but it was well worth it. Don't put too much faith in bad ratings. People are much more inclined to review when they're mad about something! Sometimes 99 people will be perfectly happy, but the one who isn't will be the only one who bothers to write a review. If you can, try to get a short-term or month-to-month lease until you're more familiar with the area. I even rented a room my first few months, so that I could apartment-shop more carefully and have time to check out the neighborhoods at different times of day (especially at night!) to see if I'd really feel safe there. Good luck!
