HELP! SLUM LORD CHECK?!?

Okay so I looking for a new place and found one (yipee!!) But... I need to find out as much about this place as possible...it's a condo. I've tried Apartment Ratings (website), and found nothing...tried, "Googling" the name of the condo....nothing negative.... I've already checked out the community, and it's extremely affluent, but I've lived in affluent DUMPS bbefore too...and don't intend to do it again if I can help it. I'm in Georgia by the way...please help...I don't want wake up to strange critters in bed with me (ants, roaches, rats, mice, etc.), plumbing issues, etc. It is an older building (built in the 50's), with a large elderly community and appears that they keep it up well...but it is OLD. The condo itself is nice looking.... C'mon peeps...help me out if you can...do you know of any sites I can go to and check out this place? Thank you!! Expert Realitor... I love you, I really do....I just don't understand why I keep coming across people in your profession who are so HELL BENT on being CURT and RUDE when giving their, "expertise" I DID go and see the place my dear...this weekend, and I'm very big on checking out a place before moving in....which is precisely WHY I'm making inquiries....I've been looking and researching since AUGUST knowing that my lease was up in October...if that ain't planning, I don't know what is.... ....as you should know (and I know you do)....looks can be deceiving.....some of the most upscale communities have the greatest issues...and it starts with the management who oddly enough, have the same (smart alleck) attitude that you do. I do however want to take this time and thank all others for their advice...I really appreciate it.

  1. I was suggest hiring an inspector to check out the place before you rent it. Let the landlord know that you are interested, but you would like to have your own personal inspector check it out before you rent. Also, you can go down to your local government office and get information on the home itself.
  2. Drive by in the middle of the night- always drive by when the bars let out on Sat. Check out the local hang out areas.... you can tell a lot by a Kmart or a Walmart. Talk to the neighbors and talk to people whom live by the building.... basically anyone outside you see that is friendly enough for a chat. Try the local pool, gym or anything... ask about the building.
  3. Shut the computer down and get you feet on the street. Have you walked the building top to bottom (including corners of the basement) and eye-balled everything? Have you chatted with the neighbors without the manager with you? Have you checked the local crime stats? Have you talked to the local cop? Have you gone to the courthouse to see have many times the management has been involved in court cases?
  4. Did it occur to you to schedule an appointment and see the INSIDE of the place before you rent?
