How can I find underground jamming grooves (nothing mainstream)?

There's this radio station that I listen to (its public radio)....it has a show where it has this deejay playing good old school underground cuts...better than the mainstream hits or songs you hear everyday on the radio..... I realized that in order to find good underrated songs is to purchase ALL of the popular musicians (and underground musician's) CDs and records (every single one they made), and play some songs other than their overplayed hits....as long as they sound good...Is that how it works?
