How can I go about verifying employment for a potential tenant?

I am renting out my condo on my own and am wondering how I can verify employment. Are there certain questions I can and can't ask? Do I have to have the renter sign anything?

1. Your best bet is to outsource the tennat screening process to a Consumor reporting Agency that is FCRA compliant. They will have standard release forms for the applicant to sign for a credit check,background check and employment verification. There are a million companies out that that will do it for about 50 bucks. It's well worth it and you can pass it along to the applicant as a non refundable application fee.
