When an employment application asks if the can contact employer?

I am currently working but I am seeking a different job. One of the questions on an employment application is if they can contact my current employer. I am not sure how to answer this question. I would say that it is fine to contact my current employer but I will wonder what my employer thinks of me if I want to leave there for another job. I am just trying to better myself but I just wonder if this puts me in jeopardy of losing my current job. When the question asks can they contact my current employer should I say yes or no?

1. Does you employer know that you're unhappy there? Does your employer know that you're looking for another job? The previous answer is right in that they may see that as a reason to cut back on your work responsibilities, but in many instances your employer won't care. This depends on the field. Also, it does always look better if you can say yes to that question, as it shows your prospective employer that you have nothing to hide.
