What is the landlord responsible for regarding temporary housing post fire?

My apartment was just destroyed by fire and we are paid through the end of April... what is my landlord responsible for reagarding refunding us rent or providing us alternative housing? My apartment was just destroyed by fire and we are paid through the end of April... what is my landlord responsible for reagarding refunding us rent or providing us alternative housing? I do have insurance and they only cover a percentage of the time you are without housing. My roommate and I have a lease starting June 1 and recognize we are responsible for May. I am trying to figure out if our landlord does provide us with alternative housing, then we are not responsible to pay him above and beyond what our normal rent is.

  1. Refund yes, alternative housing, no.
  2. Your landlord is generally responsible for providing alternative housing. However landlord/tenant acts vary from place to place.
  3. just a refund, u have to find your own house
  4. Read your lease!!!
  5. they can refund you if there is nuthing in a contract that you signed saying he would not refund you in any case, but about finding slternative housing nope that is not on him....sorry...hope you had renters ins
  6. You should check your lease and see if there is any reference to this kind of situation and see what is stated there. Rental insurance should cover your temporary housing situation. I hope you have that.
  7. You might see if red cross can help or your local churches. The churches can probably help with clothes and food. Good luck. I know fires are hard to get over just take it a day at a time.
  8. I think it all depends on where you live, but as far as I know from a past experience your landlord is not responsible for anything necessarily... that's what renter's insurance is for... So sorry that this happened to you!
  9. The landlord is NOT responsible for anything more than a refund on your deposit,,, IF, and only IF,, you would get a refund in normal circumstances. Also,,, it is ludicrous that you would think they are responsible for temporary housing. However,, most apartment complex will allow you to move into another vacant apartment if they have deemed the fire is NOT your fault.
  10. I have a friend who is a private landlord and he says he tells his tenants to have renter's insurance for a matter like this. I would suggest they probably don't have to do anything except to let you continue your lease in another unit if one is available.
  11. We have mandatory renters insurance. To my knowledge that's why we have it.Salvation army and the news paper should help you with getting donated items and temporary shelter.Did you lose everything? If you live in Mt. I have loads of stuff for you :) Feel better soon and let me know if I can help, by answering on your question.
  12. That is why you have insurance.
