Restoring to factory settings on Vista?

I have an HP Pavilion s7700n PC running Vista and recently had some virus problems.... The virus scanners say I've removed the virus, but the pc is still very slow. I have a spy-bot remover that also handles spyware, adware, and malware so that is not the problem.... But now, in addition to being incredibly slow, IE pops up on its own with some website for an apartment finder and I can't get that to stop.... I'd like to just restore the whole pc back to the factory settings since I cannot do a system restore. When I try to do system restore it comes back with an unspecified error. So if someone could just tell me how to get it back to factory, I will be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

1. you should have restore points. just go to control panel then to classic view then to backup and restore computer then go to repair windows using system repair (on the left panel) then you just pick what ever date you want to set it back to or... a long solution would to be just install windows all over again ;) but nobody wants to do that
