What's the best way to find an apartment in Los Angeles, with out going through west side rentals?

I need a new place to live in LA, my neighbors are driving me up the wall. Hate west side rentals, or rentimes. Craigslist is becoming more of a place for scams. Anyone have any ideas, besides driving around. Thank for the help $1200-1400 is my limit for a one bedroom.
