List Only

How do telemarketers know who is on the do-not-call list and who isn't?

I was thinking of starting a part-time home based business that requires cold calling of potential customers. How do I know if they are on the do not call list?

  1. i suppose you won't be able to get their number if they're on the dnc list. good luck, but don't call me at dinner time ok?
  2. You need to sign up for the national do-not-call list listings. It's free for up to 5 area codes and $62 for each additional area code so if your business is local, it's not a big expense.
  3. I always thought it would have been cheaper to have a "do call" list. You put your phone number on it if you want to be called. Both numbers would be called a lot though.
  4. There are different registries in different countries, e.g. US: National Do Not Call Registry: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx UK: Telephone Preference Service: http://mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ In Europe, it is increasingly a criminal offence to call people on the Do Not Call lists. Indeed, the legislation is much stricter than the anti-SPAM legislation. Technically, you cannot even call a customer if they have registered.
