San Diego: what's the rental market like?

Lived in Santa Barbara 10 years ago. 400/month for a decent place. Thinking about moving back from Europe to SD soon. Checked out Craigslist and SD Reader. Amazing price levels: at least 1000 for the same thing now. What areas are the least expensive if I want to rent? Buying is prohibitive. Half a million? What a laugh.

1. hmm, over a grand for a two bedroom apt, over 2 grand for a duplex or small house, it'd avoid san diego at all costs. I sold my house in santa monica for nearly a million dollars, now i'm in oregon, it's PERFECT. :)
2. good area (position of place), good service to customer, good price (not expensive but not cheap too), care about quality of the product. the product must uptodate. sold my apartement n my clothes to get half million dolar n then i don't need pay another tax except my store.
