Relocating to Chicago and need to know about apartment rentals?

I may be getting a job in downtown Chicago, right near Union Station. What "neighborhood" is this considered? I need to find some decent rental options and don't know the different neighborhood names (like Bucktown, etc) to know if they are near my new job. Any help (experience, websites, etc.) would be most appreciated! thanks, L

  1. The area around Union Station is called the West Loop or Greektown. But you don't need to live right next to where you work. In fact, it's probably better as those places are mostly condos and pretty expensive right now. The public transportation is pretty good in Chicago and you can easily get back and forth to work from as far north as Edgewater. What you should do it do an apartment search on a site like the Chicago Reader's apartment finder or some similar site. Search in your price range and then come back here and ask about the neighborhood. If you're moving here for the first time, it's probably better to worry about price before "convenience".
  2. Chicago unlike most cites has a pretty big public transportation system that will take you to every part of the city. WHat area you live in depends on the amount of rent you can afford. The area near your job is most likely $1000+ for just a studio. You can look into areas such as Wicker park, Logan Square, Buck-town, and Lincoln Park.
  3. I live far north and one place that I see that I really like is http://www.mynewplace.com/apartment/reside-on-morse-chicago-il-3yl013858482?CID=KNL-ypi-plp-Reside_on_Morse-The+Morse+Chicago It's right by the Red Line and the Metra is about 4 blocks up which is probably the train you'd want to take because it's close to Union Station. 2 blocks down you have the 147 which also goes to Union Station.
