Having trouble finding a job in Philadelphia, PA?

I graduated in 2003 with a BA degree in Labor Industrial Relations and over the past couple of months I've been having a difficult time finding a job. I went on several interviews for HR positions, but I am not getting a call back and when I contact the companies they always say "we'll be contacting you soon." I was told on various occasions that I did well on my interviews, and I always send thank you letters within 24hrs. If anyone has any suggestions or websites, career links, or anything that may be helpful please let me know. Thanks in Advance!!

  1. Start building a network. Find out who works where you want to work and try to get to know them. Find any community networking events and attend. Practice a 2 minute speech that will give people you meet a reason to remember you positively and have a business card that you can hand out. It should have basic contact information and a clear indication of the type of work that you are looking for. Make sure you are smiling when you meet new people, that you look the part for the position you are trying to find (blue jeans are not the look that C-Level people look for when trying to fill positions like HR). You need to get a network of folks that are willing to help you find something (in exchange for you helping them, most likely). Find people that attended the same school that are working and see if they can get your resume on the desk of the hiring manager. Most of all, be confident when you go to the interview. Know what you want to get across, know what question they may send your way and have good answers. Know, when you walk through the door that you are the best candidate that they are going to interview. Tell yourself that you are the best candidate for the job. If you don't believe it, how can you expect them to? Baseball players don't go to the plate thinking they are going to strike out, they go there visualizing the ball crashing into the lights in deep left center. You have to SEE yourself being offered the position.
