PA and secretaries - how did you get your job? Did you have all the necessary requirements or did you learn..?

..as you worked? I'm looking to change career direction but am not quite sure how to do this as I would like to study part time but cannot afford to pay for a course. Anyone offering SPAM links will be REPORTED

  2. I managed to get a secretarial job with only very, very little experience and just bluffed my way through it which was a bit difficult. It's fine if you've got a good typing speed and good knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Things like diary management and so on can easily be learned on the job, because almost all organisations do it differently anyway. That said, I was working in a top financial institution where all of the other secretaries were professionally trained which is why it was a bit hard to keep up. If you were to go into a smaller company or a charity there is no reason why you couldn't learn on the job. You should only need to do minimal study. Get a software package to teach you how to type - my friend bought one for £5 and said it was the best investment she'd ever made as it really did improve her typing speed. Your local college or library will probably have free, or very cheap, courses on PC use.
