How do I decorate an apartment that has wood paneling?

I'm moving into an apartment that has dark wood paneling EVERYWHERE. All of the walls in the living room, bedrooms, and kitchen are covered in it. The carpet is tan. How can I tastefully decorate the apartment. I cannot paint or remove the paneling. I'm thinking of hanging paintings, but I don't know what colors/styles to go with. Would a red, black, and grey rug match or would it be too dark? I have no furniture and I think minimalism is better than a mismatched apartment. Any suggestions?

  1. Invest in some fabric and drape the heck out of the place. You can hang floor to ceiling drapery and cover up the wooden panels. You can also create large decorative panels and place them around the room to diminish visible walls.
  2. I also was going to suggest fabric. Another idea is wall murals (doesn't have to be of a scenery) and just tack them up. You could also get cheap wall paper and tack it up. Or do a combo of both. :)
