How to apply for mail carrier?

I really want to apply to become a mail carrier. I know you have to take an exam, and I get on usps.com/employment all the time. Does there have to be an opening for the job to take the exam. Do you know if you can go to the Post Office and do it? Please help. I heardyou can take it online, but where? If you know can you copy the site and paste in on an answer please? My b/f talked to a fill-in mail carrier of ours that he knows and he said something about he thinks you could do it online or go up to the your local post office, but that's about all the information I got. I'm the one wanting to be a mail carrier, not my boyfriend....please read everything right. And I know it may take up to a few years if I even got the job which is fine. I'm wanting to know how to apply to take the exam?? I go online but it just says there are none in my area but the carrier said you can take one anytime, he just didn't give me very good info. on how to do it.
