True or false : Every year the government is required to give away free money to citizens and residents?

I have seen several ads in this regard. is this true ? Every year the government is required to give away free money to citizens and residents of the United States. Over $50 billion dollars is given away each year to individuals and businesses in the form of free grants. This free money can be used for almost any purpose - including to buy a house, start a business, pay for college, buy equipment, pay salaries, buy school supplies, get out of debt, buy clothing, pay for child camp, pay for music, art or education lessons, paying off your medical bills, pay for gas for your car, and anything else you desire.

  1. False, false, false. This is a typical line quoted by a scammer who wants to charge you for information that's actually available to everyone for free at sites like www.grants.gov (or any one of several other sites that all end in dot-gov, not dot-com). The "free money" they're talking about is only available to a narrow subset of citizens who meet very stringent requirements and who have filed a grant application and been approved by a committee. (The one grant that they're not really exaggerating too much about is one that all of my kids have taken advantage of -- the Pell Grant, which is awarded to thousands of college students every year to help them go to school. So yes, there is a grain of truth in the paragraph you quote -- but it's a grain of truth buried in a whole stinking pile of manure!)
  2. False. The vast majority of grants are given to non-profit organizations. They do not give away money for most of the reasons above. The companies that say that they do are just trying to sell you something.
