Has anyone tried the US Career Institute medical billing/transcription? Is it worth it, did you get a job? ?

I am looking into this and want to know if it is a good thing. I am a stay at home mom who would like to add to our income, and can't find anything to successfully do at home. I would just like to know if this is real and how quick you get a job after completion and who you contacted to get the job.

  1. I believe that US career is one of those online, for-profit schools which also include penn foster, stratford career, university of phoenix, capella that are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search. There aren't supposed to be too many jobs for medical biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ careers schools proclaim :) Not really sure about the job market for the medical transcriptionist but please ignore those so-called work at home opportunities as most are a scam especially if asking for money upfront or personal info which can put one at risk for identity theft. For more info on identity theft: http://www.ftc.gov and can click on term. If still interested in training, please opt for the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as it's accredited within the industry. For general career info on MT: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical transcriptionists' or such.
  2. I agree with the first person. These career schools are often such a waste of time and money. Every time I see the commercials on tv, I cringe. They want your money and they are very expensive. The one thing they do not tell you is that these jobs require experience, no matter what kind of school you choose. You will start out at low pay, IF you can find a job. There is NO guarantee of a job for anyone. They are supposed to help you, but more than likely you will have to look on your own. Never take an online class for this kind of field, either. Your best bet is to check the job market near you. Do you see ads for these jobs? If so, what do they ask of you? What are they paying? The chances of getting one of these jobs that allow you to work from home are slim to none. You should check out community colleges. Less expensive and they usually have internships, which are awesome for the resume and experience. Good luck!
  3. I'm a freelance transcriptionist. I don't do medical transcription, but I transcribe interviews, dictation, conference calls, seminars etc.. You can read a little bit about getting started as a transcriptionist in the article that I posted below. The author includes the names of a few websites where you can pick up casual/ regular transcription work. (I work mainly through eLance, which is the most popular freelance marketplace). Good Luck
