- contact HUD -look online for Texas. talk to a college counselor and get yourself into a program that will allow you to take care of your family. grants, scholarships, and loans will make this possible for you.
- I can't stand it when people who need help are looked on as low-lifes. Anyway, find the local housing authority. (HUD) There's one for every county. If you don't know where to start looking, call the local SRS office or Salvation Army office. They'll tell you where it is. There is probably a waiting list. But do it anyway and get yourself on the list, because when it's your turn you'll be glad you did. If you are needing rent assistance, there are probably some churches that help from time to time. Again, go to the SRS office and get some help. You and your child deserve some help. Don't let pride or worry about what people think or say stop you. There are lots of programs for single moms out there, let them help. Your little one is worth it. Good luck to you sweetie!
- Look in the phone book under the government section - usually blue or green and look for HUD. It means Housing and Urban Development I think. But Section 8 is under that. In many areas the ranks of subsidized housing are full. They take waiting lists but in some states, like Florida, they are overwhelmed and are taking no applications even for a waiting list. I don't know the situation in TX so you need to contact HuD there. Our look up Housing. You may find your own place and HUD will pay a certain rate in the county where you have a place. If the owner will accept the HuD amount then you can rent and they will pay them directly for the amount they agree with you. You may have to pay something as it is based on income and the kids, etc. When you make more, they may adjust the amount they pay. If you and the kids are by yourself, then you may want an apartment rather than a house as then the owner takes care of outside maintenance where in a house you are responsible for much more. HUD also uses utilities and who pays them as part of how they figure so the landlord gets more if it includes utilities though your copay may be higher. There is an application process and the landlord must fill out papers too. In some cases the landlord is already registered with HUD and approved and that goes faster. Good luck to you.
