Why can't I find a good job in Seattle?

I'm looking for something that involves competitive analysis and investment-related research. I'm currently in Portland, OR and have 8 years of experience in the insurance industry, and I want to relocate and start on a Master's degree in Finance in Seattle. I just can't seem to find anything interesting, and I've looked in craigslist, Seattletimes, washjob.com, etc.

  1. Maybe you should try calling the Human Resource departments of the companies you'd like to work for directly. Not every business is going to post in an open forum like Craigslist or a newspaper want ad, especially if they're more selective.
  2. I was in Insurance sales for ten years and made alot of contacts. If you're in the field, you should know, even in analysis/risk assessment/underwriting et al, what companies are "where" and who to talk to. It's all about networking. Ya got some companies up there, i.e. safeco, Unigard, Mutual of enumclaw, etc that are always looking for talent. I've been out of the field now for about 7 years but I still have the contacts, and you can generate them also, just by talking with the marketing managers and recruiters, as well as friends in the company that you're with now.
  3. Try things ouside the city like Bellevue, Redmond. Or call a hiring agency, they always find good stuff.
