How can I get an apartment without a paystub?

Hey I am a subcontractor/carpenter and I am trying to get an apartment. The problem is that they are wanting pay stubs and w2 forms for me to move in, understandable. Only problem is I get a direct check from my boss as my income. Is there anything I can do here or am I shit out of luck?

  1. You might try a letter from your employer verifying your employment status. You can also show them your bank records if you have any showing you've cashed the checks. If you're getting paid under the table, this is one of the drawbacks.
  2. Discuss it with your boss. He should be able to provide you some documentation to help you out. It also wouldn't hurt to explain the situation to the apartment place. They may have some ideas as to other forms of acceptable documentation. The point is, the apartment place needs proof of income and your employer should be able to provide. If nothing else, get the apartment and your employer on the phone together.
  3. Most landlords will accept a copy of your last tax return as a form of proof of employment/salary.
